Composite Fillings

Fillings you
can't see,

The approach

Conservative dentistry, always.

Our north star is keeping as much of your natural tooth as possible. Modern materials let us do that without compromise.

  • Mercury-free composite resin

BPA-free, tooth-bonded, color-matched. The same material used in cosmetic dentistry.

  • Microscope-assisted placement

We use loupes and operating lights to make sure margins are sealed completely — the difference between a filling that lasts 5 years and one that lasts 15.

  • Buffered, slow anesthetic

A buffered lidocaine solution stings less going in and takes effect faster. You're fully numb before any drilling starts.

  • Single visit, in most cases

Small and medium fillings are completed in one 45–60 minute appointment. No temporaries, no follow-ups.

  • 5-year guarantee

If a filling we place fails within five years on a tooth in good health, we replace it free.

100% mercury-free since 2011
What to expect

Step by step, in about an hour.

  1. Imaging & diagnosis

    10 min

A focused x-ray, an intraoral photo, and a careful look. We show you exactly what we see and why it needs to be addressed — or doesn't.

  2. Numb gently, slowly

    10 min

Topical anesthetic first, then a slow injection with a buffered solution that reduces the sting. We wait until you're fully numb. No "are you sure?" — you tell us when.

  3. Conservative preparation

    15–20 min

We remove only the decay, preserving every bit of healthy tooth structure we can. Modern composites bond to enamel, so we don't need to cut wide margins like the old amalgam days.

  4. Layered composite placement

    15–20 min

The filling is built up in thin layers, each light-cured. Shade is matched to your natural tooth using a calibrated guide — it should be invisible when done.

  5. Bite check & finish

    10 min

We adjust the bite carefully, polish to a smooth finish, and have you tap, chew, and slide your jaw side-to-side until everything feels even. You shouldn't feel the filling at all.

Most dental insurance plans cover composite fillings at 70–80%. We accept all major insurance.

Common questions

The answers most patients ask first.

Are tooth-colored fillings as durable as silver ones?

For small to medium fillings, yes — composite resin bonds to your tooth, which actually reinforces it. For very large restorations (when more than half the tooth is gone), an inlay, onlay, or crown is a better choice, and we'll tell you that honestly.

Do I need a filling if it doesn't hurt?

Usually, yes — by the time a cavity hurts, it's often reached the nerve, which means root canal territory. Catching decay while it's small means a smaller filling and a stronger long-term result. We'll always show you the x-ray.

I have old amalgam fillings. Should I replace them?

Only if they're actively failing — cracked, leaking, or causing decay underneath. The act of removing intact amalgam releases more mercury than leaving it alone. We don't do "preventive" amalgam replacement for cosmetic reasons unless you specifically request it.

How long do composite fillings last?

Properly placed, on a tooth that isn't under extreme grinding force, 10–15 years is a reasonable expectation. We warrant ours: if a filling we placed fails within five years, we replace it at no charge.

Will my tooth be sensitive after?

Mild cold sensitivity for a few days to two weeks is normal, especially on deeper fillings. Sharp pain when biting, lingering hot sensitivity, or pain past three weeks means we need to take another look — usually a quick bite adjustment fixes it.
