Common questions

The things people
ask most often.

Sorted by topic, written plainly. If you don't see your question here, send us a text or call — we'll answer it the same day, and we'll probably add it to this page so the next person doesn't have to ask.

01

New patients

If this is your first time visiting us — start here.

What does a first visit look like?

About 60–75 minutes. We sit and talk for a few minutes (no clipboard interrogation), take digital x-rays if it's been more than a year since your last set, do a thorough exam, and a gentle cleaning. You leave with a written summary of what we found and a plan, if any work is needed.

Is the $89 new patient special real?

Yes. No asterisks. It covers exam, full-mouth x-rays, and a standard cleaning. The only exception would be if x-rays reveal active periodontal disease that requires a deep cleaning — and we'd show you why and give you a written estimate before doing anything.

I haven't been to a dentist in years. Will I be lectured?

No. About a third of our new patients haven't seen a dentist in over five years. We don't lecture, sigh, or make you feel small. Whatever's going on, we've seen worse, and our only job is to figure out the next gentlest step forward.

What if I have dental anxiety?

Mention it when you book — no extra paperwork, no judgment. We offer nitrous oxide and oral conscious sedation. We also keep weighted blankets, headphones (Spotify or noise-canceling), and a hand-signal stop system in every operatory.

Can I get a tour before booking?

Yes — walk in on a Saturday morning or call ahead. If we're between patients we'll show you around. Some of our patients booked after a 10-minute drop-by.

02

Appointments & scheduling

How we book, confirm, and (rarely) reschedule.

How far out are appointments?

Routine cleanings: usually within 1–2 weeks. New patient appointments: typically 1–3 weeks. Dental emergencies: same-day or next-day, always.

How do I cancel or reschedule?

Text us at our main number, call, or reply to your appointment reminder. 24 hours notice ideally. We don't charge cancellation fees for first or second cancellations — life happens. After that we ask for a small deposit on future bookings.

Do you run on time?

Almost always. If we're more than 10 minutes late getting you started, your cleaning is on us. That's a real policy, not a promise — ask anyone at the front desk.

How do appointment reminders work?

A text 2 days before, an email 1 day before, a text the morning of. You can opt out of any or all of these. We don't send marketing texts. Ever.

Can I bring my kids to my appointment?

Yes. We have a small play area in the waiting room with books, a couple of fidget toys, and a tablet with kids' shows. Front-desk staff genuinely enjoy this; they're not just tolerating it.

03

Cost & insurance

How payment works, what insurance covers, financing.

Do you take my insurance?

Probably — we're in-network with Delta Dental, Cigna, Aetna, MetLife, Blue Cross of Idaho, Guardian, United Concordia, and most major plans. Full list on the Insurance page. Out-of-network? We still file for you and most patients get strong reimbursement.

How does payment work?

Insurance is filed by us — you pay only your portion, at the time of service. We accept cards, HSA/FSA, ACH, and cash. No surprise bills weeks later.

Do you offer financing?

Yes — 0% financing for 12 months on cases over $1,000 through CareCredit, and negotiated payment plans (3–18 months) for treatment over $3,000. Talk to Aubrey at the front desk — she handles all of this and she's good at it.

Will you give me a written estimate?

Always, before anything starts. Same-day work? Estimate in writing before we begin. Multi-visit treatment? Estimate covers every phase with insurance contribution and your out-of-pocket clearly broken out.

What if I don't have insurance?

You'll pay the cash-pay rates listed on each service page. We also offer a membership plan: $35/month covers two cleanings, exams, x-rays per year, and 20% off all other treatment. Worth doing if you don't expect to get traditional insurance soon.

04

Comfort, anxiety & sedation

How we work with patients who find dental visits difficult.

What sedation options do you offer?

Nitrous oxide ("laughing gas") — light, wears off in minutes, $85 per session. Oral conscious sedation — a pill before your appointment that makes the visit feel hazy and brief, $195 per session, requires a ride home. We don't offer IV sedation; if that's what your case needs, we refer to a trusted oral surgeon.

I have a strong gag reflex. Can you accommodate?

Yes. Nitrous oxide helps significantly. We also use a smaller intraoral scanner instead of traditional impressions, which is the most common trigger. Salt on the tongue, focused breathing, and pacing the appointment all help — we've worked with many gag-prone patients successfully.

Can I bring noise-canceling headphones?

Yes, and we also have a pair you can borrow. Spotify or Apple Music on your phone, our chair-side iPad has Netflix and YouTube, or our wired noise-canceling headphones with white noise are all options.

What if I have PTSD related to dental work?

Many of our patients do. We take it seriously. Things we offer routinely: a thorough pre-visit conversation (sometimes in the waiting room, sometimes the day before by phone), step-by-step narration of what we're doing, agreed-upon hand signals to pause, and longer appointment blocks so nothing feels rushed. Tell us at booking and we plan accordingly.

Will you make me feel guilty about anything?

No. Not for skipping flossing, not for missing appointments, not for being scared, not for the state of your teeth, not for past dental work you regret. None of that is helpful and none of it is our job.

05

Pediatric & family care

How we treat kids — and how kids treat us.

What age do you start seeing kids?

First visit at age 1, or within 6 months of the first tooth erupting — whichever comes first. The first few visits are largely "show and tell" — we're building trust, not pursuing billable codes.

My kid is scared. What do you do?

Whatever it takes, at their pace. First visits often involve sitting in mom's lap, looking at instruments, riding the chair up and down, counting teeth with a mirror — and that's it. No cleaning if they're not ready. We don't do papoose boards or any form of physical restraint, ever.

Will you do fluoride if I'm unsure about it?

We have an honest conversation about it. Topical fluoride applied in-office is well-supported by evidence for caries reduction. We also offer hydroxyapatite varnish as an alternative for parents who prefer it. We do not push fluoride. We do not withhold information.

Do you do sealants?

Yes, on permanent molars when they erupt (usually age 6 and 12), for kids who are at moderate-to-high caries risk. We don't seal every tooth for every kid — it's a clinical judgment, not a billing default.

What about orthodontics for kids?

We do not do braces or expanders for kids, on purpose. We'll do an early ortho screening at age 7 and refer to a trusted orthodontist if intervention is warranted. Pediatric orthodontics is its own specialty and we don't pretend to be experts.

06

Dental emergencies

When something hurts or breaks — what to do.

I have a toothache right now. What do I do?

Call us at (208) 555-0188. During hours we work in same-day emergency appointments. After hours, the voicemail has Dr. Reyes's after-hours pager number. We always answer.

I knocked out a tooth. What do I do?

Pick up the tooth by the crown (the chewing part), NOT the root. Rinse gently in milk or saline if dirty. Try to put it back in the socket. If you can't, store it in milk (not water) and get to us within 60 minutes. The first hour is critical — we can often save it.

I broke a tooth or lost a filling.

Call us. If there's no pain and the tooth isn't sharp, we'll see you within 1–3 days. If it's sharp, painful, or visibly large, we work you in same-day. Avoid chewing on that side, rinse with warm salt water, take ibuprofen as you would for a headache.

My face is swollen. What does that mean?

Facial swelling, especially with fever, indicates active infection. Call us immediately or go to an ER if you can't reach us. Spreading dental infections are a medical emergency, not just a dental one. We never treat these as routine.

Are you open weekends?

No. But we share an on-call rotation with two other local practices. If something happens Friday night through Sunday, the voicemail directs you to whoever is on call that weekend.

Still have a question

Send it our way. We actually reply.

Text, call, or email — usually answered within an hour during business hours, the next morning otherwise. No bot, no triage queue. A real person from our front desk team.
