Honesty before margin.
If you don't need it, we won't recommend it. If your old dentist suggested a treatment we disagree with, we'll tell you that to your face — and write down why.
We opened in 2011 with one goal: build the kind of dental practice that we'd actually want to send our parents, kids, and friends to. Fourteen years later, that's still the only metric we measure.
In 2010, Dr. Reyes — three years into private practice in a 12-chair production mill — went in for her own cleaning at her own office. Forty-three minutes, no eye contact, three recommendations for cosmetic work she didn't need. She drove home thinking, this is not what I went to dental school for.
A year later she opened Happy Smiles in a converted 1920s craftsman on Willow Creek Lane. Three operatories. One promise: every patient gets the kind of dentistry we'd want for our own people.
Fourteen years and one renovation later, we're still a small practice on purpose. We see about half as many patients per dentist as the national average — and that's how it's going to stay.
If you don't need it, we won't recommend it. If your old dentist suggested a treatment we disagree with, we'll tell you that to your face — and write down why.
We block longer appointments than most practices. Nothing about your mouth deserves to be rushed. Nothing.
Every clinician here puts in 30+ hours of continuing education per year — more than double the state requirement. Dentistry has changed a lot in twenty years.
We explain things. We share x-rays with you. We don't mumble in code over your face. You're a participant in your care, not a passenger.
We don't have a "team" of forty. We have six people. By design.
Founder · Lead clinician
Boise State undergrad, OHSU dental school, 14 years in private practice. Started Happy Smiles in 2011 because she couldn't find a dentist she actually wanted to send her own family to.
Outside work: backcountry skier, mediocre potter.
Associate dentist
Marquette Dental School, AEGD residency at the VA. Joined the practice in 2019. Particularly skilled with patients who are nervous, neurodivergent, or coming back after a long absence.
Will talk to you about classic Game Boy games for as long as you want.
Lead hygienist
Twelve years of clinical hygiene. The unofficial vibes-keeper of the practice and the person most likely to remember your kid's soccer team and your dog's name.
Spends weekends at the rescue dog she's slowly rehabilitating.
Hygienist
Trained in periodontics and laser-assisted therapy. Sam is unusually patient with kids and the dentist-anxious — and unusually fast with a scaler.
Competitive bouldering. Listens to true-crime podcasts, sorry.
Practice manager
The person who actually makes the practice run. Insurance, scheduling, billing — Aubrey will untangle anything for you, calmly, the same day.
Knits sweaters faster than most people read books.
Patient coordinator
The voice on the phone and the warm welcome at the front desk. Also the person who quietly remembered to put a weighted blanket in your operatory.
Owns three cats. They all hate each other politely.
